The Pharmacogenomics and Genomic Medicine Group (PGMG) investigates how genetic variation influences disease susceptibility, drug response and treatment outcomes in African populations. Our research brings together pharmacogenomics, pharmacology, molecular biology, clinical research and genomics to address health challenges that are particularly relevant to African populations.

Our work moves from the laboratory to the clinic, combining molecular and genetic approaches with patient-derived clinical data to understand why individuals respond differently to diseases and medicines. We are particularly interested in infectious diseases, drug–drug interactions, pharmacokinetics, genomic susceptibility to disease, and the development of approaches that can contribute to personalised and precision medicine.

Through approaches including PCR-RFLP, TaqMan genotyping, pharmacokinetic analysis and clinical phenotyping, we aim to identify genetic factors that can help explain differences in treatment outcomes among African populations
